This unique stair railing design is creative and easy to build.  Standard handrail comes with a recessed slot that's sized to receive traditional pickets or balusters.

The technical name for the pickets is balusters, but you may also hear them referred to as spindles.  Along the bottom, a piece called a shoe or shoe rail, is also available with a 1" wide slot.  Five-quarter (5/4) boards which are actually one inch (1") thick, can be cut into shapes like shown in the photo.  We also seen playful versions of this in coastal beach homes.

A little research into standard stair and railing parts, can reveal creative and cost-effective solutions to designing a one-of-a-kind stair without breaking the bank.
